Moccasin design evolved to suit each tribe's environment depending upon where they lived whether it was the western plains, the desert, mountain regions, or the pine-covered forests of the North American eastern coastline. Most moccasin footwear was made from the soft tanned hides of deer, moose, elk or buffalo while rawhide was used for hard-soled moccasin designs. To protect their feet from the sharp rocks, prickly cactus and rough prairie grasses, the tribes of the western plains and desert areas devised a hard-sole moccasin that was usually made from two or more pieces of hide. This hard sole of shaped rawhide and fitted leather upper required more tailoring than other types of moccasin shoes. Rabbit fur often was used to line moccasin footwear for added warmth during the colder seasons. The soft-soled slipper-like moccasin of the eastern coast tribes was often constructed from a single piece of leather. The soft-sole moccasin sides were pulled up from the bottom and around the sides of the foot with a central seam starting with a puckered stitch at the toe running along the upper instep.
