For Native Americans, moccasin shoes were more than stylish footwear. They were symbols of protection and acceptance. A woman's ability to make good quality moccasin shoes was vital to her self-image. It was also important to her pride. It took up to three weeks to tan the hides used for moccasin shoes, sometimes longer to get the desired softness. Moccasin makers beaded identical designs for matching moccasin shoes but to honor the Creator, they altered the number of beads or colors slightly to symbolize human imperfection. Perfect moccasin shoes, they believed, implied that they were better than their Creator.
Before men went to war, women made moccasin shoes for the warriors. If the women did not make the moccasins, the men did not go to war. Only new moccasin shoes were worn for battle because they were symbolic of a safe return home. When warriors were killed, new moccasin shoes provided a safe transition into the afterlife. Burial moccasins were often decorated on the bottom. Good quality moccasin shoes at the time of burial demonstrated family love for the deceased.
